The synthetic compound Cypermethrin affects the Na+ ion channels on nerve cell membranes. PP2B (calcineurin) is potently inhibited (IC50-0.03 nM). In addition, it may have a variety of effects on ion channels. The toxicology of cypermethrin depends on its precise ratio of cis- to trans-species present in commercial mixtures. For example, a mixture that is 80:20 cis-trans species shows different toxicology than a mixture that is 40:60 cis-trans species. An isomer of Cypermethrin in pure form is a solid, whereas an isomer in a mixture is a semi-solid or liquid.
